Discover Plainfield

Plainfield was settled by Quakers in 1684 and incorporated as a city in 1869. Among its surviving 18th-century buildings are the Martine House of 1717, a Friends meetinghouse of 1788 and the Nathaniel Drake House of 1746, known as George Washington's headquarters during the Battle of Short Hills in June 1777. Nearby Washington Rock, a prominent point in the Watchung Mountains, is said to be where Washington watched British troop movements.

More about Plainfield

In the second half of the 19th century Plainfield gained a reputation for a climate good for respiratory ailments, and in 1886 the newspaper publisher Thomas W. Morrison began promoting it as the "Colorado of the East." Because Denver was known as the Queen City of the Plains, the slogan was eventually shortened to the Queen City. In 1902 the legislature approved measures allowing North Plainfield to join Union County and merge with Plainfield if voters agreed, but the county change was repealed in 1903. Once a bedroom suburb of New York, Plainfield became the urban center of ten neighboring municipalities, with industries such as printing and the manufacture of chemicals, clothing, electronics and vehicle parts. It is also the birthplace of P-Funk: George Clinton founded the Parliaments while working in a Plainfield barbershop, and Parliament-Funkadelic was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997.
