Taylorsville, in southeastern Smith County, was established on the Gulf and Ship Island Railroad in 1900 on a site chosen by a railroad employee. The post office had been about five miles away at what is now Old Taylorsville, and its move to the new town fixed the town's present location. Taylorsville grew from the pine forests of the area, most of which were cut by the Eastman-Gardiner company, and plentiful lumber let businesses and homes go up quickly. The Old Stringer Hotel was built soon after the town began and burned in an arson fire in 1946.
The Watkins Museum building, built in 1901 and the oldest commercial building in town, housed the Taylorsville Signal newspaper until the late 1960s. James Thomas Watkins edited the paper from 1905, and after his death his daughters Hattie and Marie took it over in 1930; the building became a museum in 1972. The poet John Crowe Ransom, later one of the Fugitive poets, had his first teaching job at Taylorsville High School in 1905 and 1906, at age 17. Southern Pine Electric, chartered in March 1938 to serve 481 homes and farms, has its headquarters in Taylorsville.
