Raleigh, the seat of Smith County, is named for the English explorer Sir Walter Raleigh. It began as the community of Indian Springs and was renamed when it succeeded Fairfield as county seat; sources date the move to 1834 and the town's formation to 1835. It was first incorporated in 1838. The Harrison Hotel, built about 1845, was among the first public buildings in town.
During the Civil War Raleigh was home to numerous companies of the Confederate Army of Mississippi and hosted a training camp, and the Harrison Hotel served as headquarters for Colonel Robert Lowry, later governor of Mississippi. In 1863 the town lay on the route of Grierson's Raid, which helped bring about the Confederate defeat at Vicksburg. Jefferson Davis and Governors Lowry, McLaurin and Bilbo all made campaign stops at the hotel. The county's courthouse of 1892 burned in 1912, and the present Neoclassical courthouse, designed by the Weathers-Foley Company of Memphis, was built in 1913 for $50,000. Raleigh is also known as the home of the National Tobacco Spitting Contest.
