Shubuta, on the Chickasawhay River in Clarke County, began in the 1830s as a trading post near the Choctaw village of Yowani. Its name first appears on Bernard Romans's map of 1772, spelled "Chobuta," from Choctaw words meaning "smoky water." After the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek, the Choctaw ceded their land and most were forced west, and their homeland was opened to American settlers.
Shubuta became a market town for a cotton plantation district worked by enslaved African Americans, and cotton was shipped down the river to Mobile and beyond. The town grew faster after the Mobile and Ohio Railroad reached it in the 1850s, and it was incorporated in 1865. At one time it was the largest town between Meridian and Mobile, drawing shoppers from 40 miles around to its many stores. The area's first newspaper, the Mississippi Messenger, was founded here in 1879. Sources Wikipedia: Shubuta, Mississippi
