Waynesboro, the seat of Wayne County, replaced an older town as county seat. About a mile west stood Winchester, the site of Patton's Fort in 1813, chartered in 1818 near the old road from Natchez to Georgia. Winchester became a thriving trade center and served as the county seat until 1867.
In 1854 the Mobile and Ohio Railroad was built through Wayne County, and a station called Waynesboro was built about five miles north of Winchester. The railroad laid out the future town around the station and sold lots, and in 1867 Waynesboro took over as the county seat. The discovery of oil in Wayne County in the 1940s brought a boom: Waynesboro's population more than doubled, from 1,445 in 1940 to 3,442 in 1950. Local radio station WABO went on the air in 1954.
