Enterprise, on the Chickasawhay River in Clarke County, was founded in 1834 by John J. McRae, who later became governor of Mississippi, and named, it was said, "to denote the policy of their inhabitants." It was a center of early trade on the river with the Gulf Coast, and in 1855 the Mobile and Ohio Railroad built a station here.
In the Civil War Enterprise was an important Confederate post. A training camp for new units was set up early in the war, and local companies included the Enterprise Guards of the 14th Mississippi Infantry and the Enterprise Tigers of the 37th Mississippi. After the fall of Vicksburg and Port Hudson in July 1863, thousands of paroled Confederate soldiers were sent to a camp here to await exchange. When Jackson fell to Union forces in May 1863, the state government briefly moved to Enterprise before going on to Columbus. Nearby on the Chunky River, Irish immigrant John Cooper Dunn built a ceramic factory, then diverted the river to create a 65-foot waterfall that powered a gristmill and cotton mill; during the war the Confederacy took over his factories to make blankets, knives, hats and clothing.
