Discover Baldwyn

Baldwyn, whose main street runs along the line between Lee and Prentiss counties, has the unusual distinction of having been incorporated in four counties. It grew out of the village of Carrollville, home of the Chickasaw chief Tishomingo, who died of smallpox near Little Rock in 1839 while being moved west with his people. When the Mobile and Ohio Railroad was built through around November 1860, it missed Carrollville by a mile and a half, and residents moved to the new town, named for the civil engineer who surveyed the line.

More about Baldwyn

Baldwyn was founded on November 20, 1860, and incorporated by the legislature in Tishomingo and Itawamba counties on April 1, 1861. Lee County was formed from parts of Itawamba and Pontotoc on October 26, 1866, and Tishomingo was divided into Alcorn, Prentiss and Tishomingo counties on April 15, 1870. Near Baldwyn, on June 10, 1864, General Nathan Bedford Forrest, who had turned back from trying to cut Sherman's supply line in Tennessee, met a Union force marching from Memphis under General Sturgis at Brice's Cross Roads. Forrest's 4,787 Confederates routed 7,900 Union troops, who retreated in confusion to Memphis, though the battle kept Forrest from his main mission and Sherman continued toward Atlanta.
