Shannon, in southern Lee County, is named for Samuel Shannon, who bought land there from the Chickasaw chief Itawamba in the early 1800s and built a cabin and farm. More settlers came after the Treaty of Pontotoc of 1832 ceded the Chickasaw lands. Nearby, on the Natchez Trace, stood the village of Pontatock, whose council house became the capitol of the Chickasaw Nation in the 1820s; chiefs met there to sign treaties and make laws, and each summer two or three thousand Chickasaw camped nearby to receive annual payments for land sold to the federal government.
A church was founded in 1839. The original townsite lay north of the present town, which moved when the Mobile and Ohio Railroad was built in 1860; a post office opened on November 6, 1860, and the town was incorporated on July 20, 1870. First in Itawamba County, Shannon became part of Lee County when it was formed in 1866. Constantine Shannon is credited with bringing strawberry plants from Shannon to Plant City, Florida, helping start its strawberry industry. Shannon later had a corn elevator, a grain elevator and three cotton gins, and around 1915 Coca-Cola was bottled in town.
