Amory, in Monroe County, was founded as a planned railroad town. In 1887 the Kansas City, Memphis and Birmingham Railroad, needing a midpoint between Memphis and Birmingham to service its locomotives, laid out the new town near the Alabama line.
About a mile and a half away stood Cotton Gin Port on the Tombigbee River. It began as an Indian trading post at the southern end of Gaines Trace and was named for a cotton gin the U.S. government built for the Chickasaw around 1801; it grew into an important river town and cotton market after Monroe County was formed in 1821. Believing the railroad essential, its residents abandoned it in 1887 and moved to Amory, leaving only ruins and an old cemetery. Nearby, on May 22, 1736, Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville, governor of French Louisiana, landed a force to attack the Chickasaw and built a palisade of 600 log posts; defeated at the Battle of Ackia, he retreated to the fort and on May 29 to Mobile. On the evening of March 24, 2023, an EF3 tornado struck Amory, killing two people and tearing the roof off the high school.
