Discover Purvis

Purvis, the seat of Lamar County, is named for its founder, Thomas Melville Purves, born on March 8, 1820. Purves received a land grant in 1870 in what was then Marion County, and in 1871 he homesteaded 160 acres with his wife, Dorothy Abney Purves, a doctor who tended the sick and delivered babies, and their five children, living in a two-room log cabin. In 1884 the New Orleans and Northeastern Railroad gained a right-of-way across his land and built a depot with a sign reading "Purvis"; Purves eventually changed the spelling of his own name to match, and he ran the first boarding house for the railroad crews. His son John became the town's first mayor.

More about Purvis

The Town of Purvis was incorporated on February 25, 1888, and began as a sawmill town on what is said to be the highest point on the railroad between Meridian and New Orleans. On April 24, 1908, a destructive tornado struck Purvis, killing 47 people, injuring more than 300 and destroying more than half the homes. Lamar County was created on February 19, 1904, from part of Marion County and named for Lucius Quintus Cincinnatus Lamar, and Purvis was made its county seat, with the railroad depot as the center of town.
