Discover Royal Oak

Royal Oak was named in 1819 during one of the surveying expeditions led by Territorial Governor Lewis Cass. A large oak tree at the small settlement reminded Cass of the Royal Oak in which King Charles II hid to escape the Roundheads after the Battle of Worcester, and he gave the settlement that name. Royal Oak was not incorporated as a village until 1891, and it was reincorporated as a city in 1921.

More about Royal Oak

In the early 20th century Royal Oak developed as a suburb of Detroit, which was booming with industry and the auto trade. The Royal Oak Farmers Market opened as a truck market at Fourth and Troy streets on October 14, 1925, a cooperative venture of the new city and Oakland County, which still had many farmers, and its present building at 11 Mile Road and Troy Street was dedicated on July 1, 1927. In the 1920s Father Charles Coughlin, a Canadian Catholic priest, became the founding pastor of the Shrine of the Little Flower, raising funds through his ministry to build its limestone church and tower, now a prominent landmark, and he began broadcasting religious talks from the site. In the 1930s his broadcasts grew political. He at first supported President Franklin D. Roosevelt, then turned against him, promoted the causes of the fascist leaders of Germany and Italy and spread an increasingly antisemitic message. After World War II began, the Roosevelt administration, with the support of the Catholic hierarchy, shut down his radio operation. Sources Wikipedia: Royal Oak, Michigan
