Judah Church and Moses, or Samuel, Munson were among the first settlers. Munson arrived in 1824, built a sawmill in 1825 and planted the first orchard. Jesse Decker came from upstate New York with his wife, Mary, in 1825 and became so central to the community that it was known as Decker's Settlement, while the town was called Canandaigua, after the New York town the settlers came from. It soon had a sawmill, tavern, post office, store, blacksmith shop, school and cemetery, and in 1828 a power dam joined several small lakes into the mile-wide Lake Canandaigua.
In 1830 Decker raised the area's first frame barn with the help of local Native Americans, and the post office opened in 1832 with him as postmaster. In 1835 the community and lake were renamed Orion and Lake Orion, a name chosen by the village attorney, and the Township of Orion was formed, with Decker as first supervisor at $2 a year. He was elected to the first Michigan House of Representatives in 1837 and owned 440 acres by 1840. In 1909 a marine postal service began delivering mail by boat to more than 300 cottages on the lake and islands, the first such service in the country. In 1929 Amelia Earhart visited at the invitation of the aviator William Edmund Scripps and flew an experimental glider, and that year the village of Orion was renamed Lake Orion. Michigan Central trains served the village from 1872 to 1976. Sources Wikipedia: Lake Orion, Michigan
