The Eastern Abenaki called the Portland peninsula Machigonne, "great neck." The first European settler was Christopher Levett, an English naval captain granted 6,000 acres in 1623 to found a settlement on Casco Bay. He built a stone house, left ten men there and returned to England to write about his voyage, but the settlement failed, and his colonists' fate is unknown. Fort Levett in the harbor is named for him.

More about Portland

The peninsula was settled in 1632 as a fishing and trading village called Casco, renamed Falmouth when Massachusetts took over Casco Bay in 1658. The Abenaki destroyed the village in 1676, during King Philip's War. It was rebuilt, and in King William's War a French and Native raiding party largely destroyed it again in the Battle of Fort Loyal in 1690. On October 18, 1775, the Royal Navy under Captain Henry Mowat burned Falmouth. After the Revolution, the section called the Neck grew rapidly as a shipping port. In 1786 its residents formed a separate town and named it Portland, after the Isle of Portland off Dorset, England, from the Old English for "land surrounding a harbor." The Embargo Act of 1807, which cut off trade with Britain, put heavy strain on the port's economy. Sources Wikipedia: Portland, Maine
