Salisbury began as a small colonial outpost set up under Lord Baltimore at the head of the Wicomico River, a convenient spot for trade, and was established in 1732. Because of similar geography and the nationality of its founders, many historians believe it was named for the English cathedral city of Salisbury. It was incorporated as a city in 1854.
During the Civil War Union forces camped in Salisbury to search for Southern sympathizers and to stop contraband from reaching the Confederacy. Fires in 1860 and 1886 burned two-thirds of the town, but it kept growing as the leading town of the area, and when Wicomico County was formed from parts of Somerset and Worcester counties in 1867, Salisbury became its seat. In 1909 the Humphrey's Dam burst and flooded parts of the town. Three Black men were lynched in Salisbury in 1898 and 1931, and town leaders, including the fire chief and police chief, were allegedly complicit.
