Discover Olathe

John T. Barton founded Olathe in the spring of 1857, riding to the center of Johnson County and staking two quarter sections as a townsite. He later said the prairie was covered with verbena and other wildflowers and he thought he should name the town Beautiful. He is said to have asked a Shawnee interpreter how to say "beautiful," and the answer was "Olathe." The town was incorporated in 1857 and, growing fast, became the county seat in October 1859.

More about Olathe

Olathe lay in the middle of Bleeding Kansas, the violent struggle between free-state settlers and proslavery Missourians. Kansas entered the Union as a free state in 1861, and that year Union officials set up a military post in the town with a company of troops and local militia. On September 6, 1862, William Quantrill led a surprise raid by Confederate guerrillas that killed about half a dozen people and destroyed most of the town. Quantrill captured the post and tried to make the men swear allegiance to the Confederacy, an oath ruled invalid in November 1862 because the guerrillas were not legitimate military units. Kansas militia held the post for the rest of the war. Quantrill's men raided again on August 20 and 21, 1863, passing through on the way to the Lawrence Massacre. Sources Wikipedia: Olathe, Kansas
