After the Louisiana Purchase of 1803, the area east of present Leawood opened for settlement, and the Santa Fe Trail, which ran through it, aided its development. During the Border Ruffian War of 1855 to 1857, part of Bleeding Kansas, proslavery raiders from Missouri attacked settlers, traders and travelers on the trail and damaged the local economy. Conditions improved with the founding of Oxford, Kansas, Leawood's predecessor, but the township was ruined by the Civil War, and little was left by 1865.
Modern Leawood was established in the 1920s after Oscar G. Lee, a retired police chief from Oklahoma who owned the original town site, moved to Johnson County and oversaw construction of Lee Boulevard for public use, and the city is named for him. In 1948 a housing development by the Kroh Brothers led to incorporation, and on November 30, 1948, Leawood became a city of the third class with fewer than 2,000 people. It became a second-class city by 1959, and it is now a first-class city with 33,902 residents in 2020. The Kroh family's developers modeled their work on that of the Kansas City planner J. C. Nichols, whose neighborhoods featured large lots, curving streets, uniform architecture, extensive deed restrictions and homes associations. Sources Wikipedia: Leawood, Kansas
