Peoria is described as the earliest permanent European settlement in what is now Illinois. In 1680 the French explorers Rene-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, and Henri de Tonti built Fort Crevecoeur on the Illinois River nearby. That fort burned, and in 1813 Fort Clark was built on the site. When Peoria County was organized in 1825, Fort Clark was officially named Peoria, after the Peoria tribe of the Illinois Confederation. Scholars have proposed that the name comes from a Proto-Algonquian word meaning "to dream with the help of a manitou," but its origin remains uncertain.
Peoria was incorporated as a village on March 11, 1835, with Rudolphus Rouse as village president until 1836. John B. Lishk was appointed the first chief of police in 1837. The city was incorporated on April 21, 1845, and William Hale became its first mayor. In the late 19th century Peoria was an important stop in American bicycle racing. Races at Lake View Park drew riders such as Marshall "Major" Taylor, who became world champion and called Peoria the "Mecca" of the sport. For much of the 20th century the city had a red-light district of brothels and bars known as the Merry-Go-Round, and Richard Pryor got his start as a performer on North Washington Street in the early 1960s. In 2021 Rita Ali became Peoria's first woman and first African American mayor. Sources Wikipedia: Peoria, Illinois
