Davenport, IA news and local guide

After the United States defeated a group of Sauk, Meskwaki and Kickapoo in the Black Hawk War of 1832, it made the Black Hawk Purchase on September 21, 1832, on the site of present Davenport, buying about 6 million acres of eastern Iowa for $640,000, about 11 cents an acre. Black Hawk himself was a prisoner, and the Sauk chief Keokuk, who had stayed neutral, signed. General Winfield Scott and Illinois Governor John Reynolds acted for the United States, and Antoine Le Claire, a Metis interpreter, translated. Keokuk gave a large tract to Le Claire's wife, Marguerite, granddaughter of a Sauk chief, on condition that Le Claire build their house on the spot where the treaty was signed, and he finished the Treaty House in the spring of 1833. Le Claire founded Davenport on May 14, 1836, naming it for his friend Colonel George Davenport, who had been stationed at Fort Armstrong. The city was incorporated on January 25, 1839, and was governed in turn by the Michigan, Wisconsin and Iowa territories and then the state of Iowa. When Scott County was formed in 1837, Davenport and neighboring Rockingham competed to be the county seat, and Davenport won. Sources Wikipedia: Davenport, Iowa
