Discover Jonesboro
Settlers came to the Jonesboro area as early as 1821, after the Treaty of Indian Springs opened the land, and the town was founded as Leaksville in 1823. The Flint River Baptist Church was built on a hill there in 1825. After the Macon and Western Railroad reached the area in 1846, the town was renamed Jonesboro in honor of the railroad official Samuel Goode Jones, son of Thomas G. Jones, and it was incorporated in 1859. The railroad through town runs along the Eastern Continental Divide, with no bridges on the tracks for many miles in either direction.

During the 1996 Summer Olympics, Jonesboro hosted the beach volleyball competition on an artificial beach built at Clayton County International Park.
