Discover Dalton

Woodland peoples and the Creek first held the Dalton area, and the first recorded white visitor was Hernando de Soto in 1540. By the mid-18th century the Cherokee had pushed the Creek out, and they called the north Georgia mountains their Enchanted Land until their own forced removal in 1838. By then work was under way on the Western and Atlantic Railroad to join the Tennessee River with the Georgia Railroad. In 1847 Dalton was defined as a circle one mile in radius around the railroad depot, the line's last segment was completed at Tunnel Hill in 1850, and the East Tennessee and Georgia Railroad followed in 1852. The city was named for Edward Dalton White.

More about Dalton

Dalton first saw Civil War action during the Great Locomotive Chase on April 12, 1862, and the Battle of Chickamauga was fought a few miles west in September 1863. In the First Battle of Dalton, skirmishes from February 22 to 27, 1864, Union General George H. Thomas probed Joseph E. Johnston's Army of Tennessee and withdrew to Chattanooga when it held, and fighting at Rocky Face Ridge and Dug Gap opened the Atlanta campaign. Catherine Evans Whitener's revival of the old craft of candlewicking gave rise to a cottage industry in chenille bedspreads, displayed on clotheslines along U.S. 41, a stretch nicknamed Peacock Alley for a favorite pattern. The business grew into a multimillion-dollar industry by the 1950s, and when Glenn Looper adapted the tufting machinery to work with jute, Dalton became the center of the tufted carpet industry, which remains the region's largest employer.
