Discover Cumming

The Cumming area was home to the Cherokee, thought to have arrived in the mid-18th century, who won the land from the Creek in the Battle of Taliwa and pushed them south of the Chattahoochee. The Cherokee lived alongside white settlers until gold was found in Georgia in 1828, and miners pressed for their removal; the Treaty of New Echota of 1835 forced the Cherokee Nation west on the Trail of Tears. Their land became Cherokee County in 1831, and in 1832 it was divided into several counties, including Forsyth.

More about Cumming

In 1833 the town of Cumming was formed from two 40-acre lots from the 1832 state land lottery, bought by justices of the county's Inferior Court for a county seat, and in 1834 a post office opened and the legislature incorporated the town as the seat of Forsyth County. A second charter in 1845 set up a mayor-council government. The name is commonly credited to Colonel William Cumming, though others suggest the Rev. Frederick Cumming or Alexander Cuming, son of a Scottish baronet. Gold mining brought prosperity in the 1830s and 1840s, but the California Gold Rush and railroads that bypassed the town brought hard times. Sherman's army did not pass through during the Civil War, and the courthouse, burned after a lightning strike in 1900, was rebuilt in 1905. In 1912, after two reported attacks on young white women allegedly by Black men, a suspect was dragged from the jail and lynched, and the governor sent militia and declared martial law. In the months that followed, bands of night riders terrorized Black residents and posted notices ordering them to leave, driving nearly the entire Black population out of the county.
