Discover Alpharetta

In the 1830s the Cherokee of Georgia were forcibly removed to Indian Territory under the Indian Removal Act, and pioneers and farmers settled on the land along a former Cherokee trail running from the North Georgia mountains to the Chattahoochee River. One of the first permanent landmarks was the New Prospect Camp Ground, or Methodist Camp Ground, beside a spring near today's downtown, which later served as a trading post for settlers. The Simeon and Jane Rucker Log House, built in 1833, is on the National Register of Historic Places.

More about Alpharetta

Known as the town of Milton through July 1858, Alpharetta was chartered on December 11, 1858, with boundaries extending a half mile in every direction from the courthouse. It was the seat of Milton County until 1931, when Milton County merged into Fulton County to avoid bankruptcy during the Depression. Accounts of the name differ. It may come from Alfarata, a fictional Indian girl in the 19th-century song "The Blue Juniata," or from alpha, the first letter of the Greek alphabet, though the local museum notes that the meaning of "retta" is unknown. The residents, mostly Methodists and Baptists, worked as farmers, blacksmiths, millers, merchants, carpenters and ditchers, and some held a small number of enslaved people. During the Civil War local men fought or served in the home guard, but Union forces did not advance north of Roswell, about six miles away. Sources Wikipedia: Alpharetta, Georgia
