Pembroke Pines was incorporated on January 16, 1960. The name goes back to Sir Edward J. Reed, a member of Parliament for Pembroke from 1874 to 1880. In 1882 Reed formed the Florida Land and Mortgage Company to buy 2 million acres of mostly swampland across South Florida from Hamilton Disston, and a road through one tract became Pembroke Road. Walter Smith Kipnis, the first mayor, suggested Pembroke Pines for the pines near that road.
More about Pembroke Pines
The area was farmland with many dairies, including the Waldrep Dairy Farm, where Pembroke Lakes Mall now stands. It grew after World War II as service members retired there. Kipnis's house, built in 1956, was one of the first. The community incorporated as a village in 1959, but builders challenged it, and a legal fight over the boundaries followed before the 1960 incorporation.
