Live Oak, the seat of Suwannee County, was built along the Pensacola and Georgia Railroad in or before 1861 and named for a live oak tree under which railroad workers rested and ate lunch. The community that grew around the depot was called Live Oak Station. During the Civil War the railroad was a vital route, and earthworks built where it crossed the Suwannee River west of town survive in Suwannee River State Park. To ease Confederate supply problems, a north-south rail link into Georgia was completed through Live Oak in early 1865, too late to help the war effort but in time to open the county's interior to settlement afterward.
Lewis Powell, one of John Wilkes Booth's co-conspirators in Lincoln's assassination, moved to Live Oak from Alabama at 13 and lived there until 17, when he lied about his age to join the 2nd Florida Infantry. In 1868 the legislature made Live Oak the county seat, confirmed by election the next year. It was incorporated as a town in 1878 and as a city in 1903 and served as a minor railroad hub. Live Oak was the original site of Edward Waters College and of Florida Memorial College, and Harry Tyson Moore was a native of Suwannee County.
