Discover Loveland

In the late 18th and early 19th centuries the Loveland area was a hub for French fur trappers. Mariano Medina built the first settlement, Fort Namaqua, a trading post and stage station, in 1858, on the site of today's Namaqua Park. The nearby Big Thompson post office opened on November 12, 1862, and post offices called Namaqua and Loveland operated briefly in the 1860s and 1870s.

More about Loveland

Loveland was officially founded in 1877 along the new Colorado Central Railroad near its crossing of the Big Thompson River and named for William A. H. Loveland, the railroad's president. It was built a mile upstream from the small settlement of St. Louis, whose buildings were moved to the new site. The Big Thompson post office moved to Loveland on January 10, 1878, and the town was incorporated on April 30, 1881. For the first half of the 20th century the town depended on agriculture, chiefly sugar beets and sour cherries. The Great Western Sugar Company built a factory in Loveland in 1901 that remained a major employer until it closed in 1977, and in the late 1920s the Spring Glade Orchard was the largest cherry orchard west of the Mississippi, with the area's orchards producing more than $1 million worth of cherries a year.
