Discover Santa Barbara

People have lived in the Santa Barbara area for at least 13,000 years. A Clovis-like point was found on the western county coast in the 1980s, and the remains of Arlington Springs Man were found on Santa Rosa Island in the 1960s. At least 25,000 Chumash lived in the region before Spanish contact, and five villages stood in the area, including Mispu, where Santa Barbara City College is now, Syukhtun, the large village of the chief Yanonalit, and Amolomol at the mouth of Mission Creek.

More about Santa Barbara

Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo sailed through the Santa Barbara Channel in 1542. In 1602 Sebastian Vizcaino named the channel and one of the Channel Islands Santa Barbara. Gaspar de Portola's land expedition came through around 1769, and Father Juan Crespi named a large Native town Laguna de la Concepcion, though Vizcaino's name survived. The first permanent European residents were soldiers and missionaries under Felipe de Neve, who arrived in 1782 and built the Presidio to secure Spain's claim and convert the Native people. Many brought families, and a small town of adobes grew around the Presidio. Mission Santa Barbara, the tenth California mission, was founded on the feast of St. Barbara, December 4, 1786, and dedicated by Padre Fermin Lasuen, Junipero Serra's successor as president of the missions. Chumash laborers built the water system that carried creek water from the canyon to the mission. Sources Wikipedia: Santa Barbara, California
