Vallejo was once home to the Coast Miwok and to the Suisunes and other Patwin peoples, and three Native sites have been recorded in the rock outcrops on Sulphur Springs Mountain above Blue Rock Springs Park. The city was part of the 84,000-acre Rancho Suscol, granted in 1843 by Governor Manuel Micheltorena to General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, the Mexican officer responsible for settling and keeping peace in the North Bay, who had founded the pueblo of Sonoma in 1836. In the Bear Flag Revolt of 1846 he was imprisoned at Sutter's Fort, though he generally accepted American annexation, seeing the benefits it would bring. He served in the state constitutional convention of 1849 and as Indian agent for Northern California, but challenges to his land titles eventually left him impoverished.
More about Vallejo
In 1851 Vallejo was designated the state capital, and the legislature first met there in 1852, but General Vallejo never completed a capitol building. The legislature met there again in 1853 only to move the capital to Benicia, named for Vallejo's wife, on February 4, 1853, after a month.
The federal government then established a naval shipyard on Mare Island, which helped the city recover from losing the capital. Because of the shipyard, Filipino immigrants began settling in Vallejo in the early 20th century. The yard operated for more than a hundred years before closing in 1996.
