The Ohlone lived throughout the Santa Clara Valley when the Spanish arrived in the 1770s, and smallpox, measles and other diseases greatly reduced their numbers. Many survivors were forced into the missions, including Mission Santa Clara, founded in 1777. In 1843 Rancho Pastoria de las Borregas, part of which became Mountain View and Sunnyvale, was granted to Francisco Estrada and his wife, Inez Castro. In 1844 Lupe Ynigo, one of the few Native Americans to receive a land grant, was given Rancho Posolmi, named for an Ohlone village that once stood in the area.

More about Sunnyvale

Martin Murphy Jr. came to California with the Stephens-Townsend-Murphy Party in 1844. In 1850 he bought 4,894 acres of Rancho Pastoria de las Borregas for $12,500 and set up a wheat farm and ranch called Bay View, with the first wood-frame house in Santa Clara County, shipped from New England. In 1861 he let the San Francisco and San Jose Rail Road lay tracks across Bay View and build Murphy's Station, and Lawrence's Station was later added at the south edge of the ranch. When Murphy died in 1884 his land was divided among his heirs, and parcels were sold from 1900 to the developer Walter Crossman. The Bay View house was torn down in 1961 and rebuilt in 2008 as the Sunnyvale Heritage Park Museum. In the 1870s small fruit orchards replaced many of the big wheat farms as wheat farming stopped paying. Sources Wikipedia: Sunnyvale, California
