The town was first called White Sulphur Springs, and as early as 1834 its springs, said to have therapeutic properties, drew visitors much as Hot Springs did. White County was created in 1835, and in 1837 the state renamed the county seat to honor Richard Searcy, a prominent Arkansas legislator who had died in 1832. Israel Moore, who had come west from Philadelphia, laid out the original streets and named them for those of old Philadelphia near Independence Hall, including Race, Arch, Market, Vine, Cherry, Spruce, Locust and Pine. In 1957 the city named Moore Street for him. Spring Street and Spring Park recall the town's origins as White Sulphur Springs.
