Indigenous peoples have lived around Bellingham for millennia, where the territories of many Coast Salish peoples meet. The Lummi, Nooksack, Samish and Nuwhaha fished in Bellingham Bay and shared hunting and gathering grounds in the nearby forests and prairies. After the Treaty of Point Elliott of 1855 the Lummi Reservation was created just west of the city, and many Lummi moved there while working in Bellingham, running river ferries and working in construction and logging. The Nooksack resisted several U.S. attempts in the 1870s to move them to the Lummi Reservation and stayed in the Nooksack Valley. The bay was named in 1792 by George Vancouver for Sir William Bellingham.
The first European settlers came about 1852, when Henry Roeder and Russel Peabody set up a lumber mill at Whatcom, now the northern part of the city. About the same time Dan Harris claimed a homestead on Padden Creek, and after buying neighboring land he platted the town of Fairhaven in 1883. The Fraser Canyon Gold Rush of 1858 brought a brief boom. In 1854 Roeder's agents found coal south of Whatcom Creek at Sehome, now downtown, and the land was sold to San Francisco investors who formed the Bellingham Bay Coal Company. Coal was mined beneath the city for about a hundred years, until the last mine closed in 1955. In the early 1890s three railroads reached the bay towns, and in 1889 Pierre Cornwall and other investors formed the Bellingham Bay Improvement Company. The modern city of Bellingham was incorporated in 1903, consolidating the settlements of Bellingham, Whatcom, Fairhaven and Sehome. Sources Wikipedia: Bellingham, Washington
