Lubbock, TX news and local guide

A post office existed in Yellow House Canyon by 1884, and a small town called Old Lubbock grew up about three miles east. In 1890 it merged with Monterey, a town south of the canyon, and the combined town kept the name Lubbock. The move included rolling Old Lubbock's Nicolett Hotel across the canyon to the new site. Lubbock became the county seat in 1891 and was incorporated on March 16, 1909, the year the first train arrived. Texas Technological College, now Texas Tech University, was founded in 1923, and its medical school opened in 1969. Lubbock Christian University was founded in 1957. Lubbock Army Airfield, later Reese Air Force Base, opened in August 1941 and trained pilots until it closed on September 30, 1997. During World War II, Royal Air Force cadets training at Terrell, Texas, flew to Lubbock as a stand-in for Cork, Ireland, which lies the same distance from London. In August 1951 a V-shaped formation of lights seen over the city, witnessed by Texas Tech professors and photographed, became the Lubbock Lights, one of the first nationally famous UFO cases.
