Texarkana grew where rival railroads met at the Texas-Arkansas line. In the late 1850s the builders of the Cairo and Fulton Railroad were pushing south across Arkansas, and by 1874 they had reached the Red River and the Texas line. From February 16 to March 19, 1874, trains ran between the Texas border and the Red River, where passengers and freight were ferried north to Fulton, Arkansas, to continue by rail, until the Red River Bridge opened on March 20, 1874, giving direct service to St. Louis. Meanwhile the Texas and Pacific Railroad built across Texas to the Arkansas line, and on December 8, 1873, it sold the first town lots. The first buyer, J. W. Davis, bought the land where the Hotel McCartney now stands on the Texas side, across from Union Station, which straddles the state line.
The name is a blend of Texas, Arkansas and nearby Louisiana, but accounts of its origin differ, and it was in use before the town was founded. The most popular story says Col. Gus Knobel, a surveyor for the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railway, painted the name on a plank, nailed it to a tree and declared it the name of a town to be built there. Another points to a Red River steamboat named the Texarkana around 1860, and a third to a drink called Texarkana Bitters mixed by a storekeeper named Swindle in Red Land, Louisiana.
