Greenville was founded in 1846 and named for Thomas J. Green, who played an important part in establishing the Republic of Texas and served in its Congress. Before the Civil War the town and county were divided over secession. The Greenville attorney and state senator Martin D. Hart, a prominent Unionist, raised a company that fought for the Union in Arkansas while other residents fought for the Confederacy, a division noted on a historical marker in downtown's SPOT Park. After the war the local economy came to depend partly on cotton, and with 12,384 people in 1920, Greenville was then the 20th-largest city in Texas.

More about Greenville

From July 7, 1921, a sign over Lee Street, the main downtown street between the train and bus stations, read "Welcome to Greenville, The Blackest Land, The Whitest People." It was taken down on April 13, 1965, possibly at the urging of Governor John Connally, who had visited weeks earlier, and when it was put back in 1968 its wording was changed to "The Greatest People." The original is now in the collection of the Audie Murphy American Cotton Museum. During World War II the Mexican air force's Escuadron 201 was stationed in Greenville while training at nearby Majors Field. In 1957 the city annexed the small town of Peniel, founded in 1899 as a Church of the Nazarene community. Sources Wikipedia: Greenville, Texas
