The 1843 Treaty of Bird's Fort between the Republic of Texas and several Native American tribes set a line of trading houses that later stood where the Clear Fork and West Fork of the Trinity River meet. After the Mexican War, Major General William Jenkins Worth proposed a line of ten forts along the Texas frontier in January 1849, and he died of cholera a month later. On June 6, 1849, Major Ripley A. Arnold of the Second Dragoons, advised by Middleton Tate Johnson, set up Camp Worth on the Trinity. In August he moved it to the bluff above the Clear Fork, and the War Department named it Fort Worth on November 14, 1849. The fort was abandoned on September 17, 1853, and the courthouse now stands on its site.
As a stop on the Chisholm Trail, Fort Worth became a rough, busy cattle town and later a ranching center, earning the nickname Cowtown. During the Civil War its population fell as low as 175. Merchants reopened in the early 1870s, and Khleber M. Van Zandt founded the firm that became Fort Worth National Bank in 1884. After the panic and hard winter of 1873, with the railroad stalled 30 miles away, the former Fort Worth lawyer Robert E. Cowart wrote in the Dallas Herald in 1875 that the town was so dead he had seen a panther asleep in the street by the courthouse. When the town recovered in 1876, residents took up the insult, and Panther City remains a local name. A panther tops the police badge. Sources Wikipedia: Fort Worth, Texas
