Discover Spring

The Orcoquiza people originally lived in the area now known as Spring. In 1836 the provisional government of Texas placed it in the Harrisburg municipality, and in 1838 William Pierpont opened a trading post on Spring Creek. Spring had 153 residents in 1840. By the mid-1840s many German immigrants, including Gus Bayer and Carl Wunsche, were farming there, and after the Civil War people came from Louisiana and other parts of the South. Sugarcane and cotton were the main cash crops.

More about Spring

The International and Great Northern Railroad, which opened through Spring in 1871, made the town grow, and a post office followed in 1873. In 1884 Spring had 150 residents, two steam saw and grist mills, two cotton gins, three churches and several schools. When the line to Fort Worth opened in 1901 to 1903, Spring got a roundhouse and became a switchyard with 200 rail workers and 14 tracks, and the population rose to 1,200 by 1910. After the roundhouse moved to Houston in 1923, the town declined to about 300 people by 1931. The Spring State Bank, opened in 1912, was robbed several times in the 1930s, and a false rumor credited one robbery to Bonnie and Clyde. Spring had 700 people in 1947. Houston's suburbs spread north in the 1970s, and old houses in the town were restored as shops. The Old Town Spring Association was formed in 1980, and by 1989 Old Town Spring was a tourist attraction. The wider Spring area had 33,111 residents in 1990. Sources Wikipedia: Spring, Texas
