On October 27, 1811, the Tennessee General Assembly chose a site for a new seat for Rutherford County and named it Cannonsburgh for Newton Cannon, the area's representative. At William Lytle's suggestion it was renamed Murfreesborough on November 29, 1811, for the Revolutionary War hero Colonel Hardy Murfree, great-grandfather of the author Mary Noailles Murfree. The name was shortened to Murfreesboro when the town was chartered in January 1812.
More about Murfreesboro
As settlement moved west, Knoxville became an inconvenient capital, and in 1818 Murfreesboro was made the capital of Tennessee. Its population boomed, but eight years later Nashville took its place.
After the drawn Battle of Perryville in Kentucky, the Confederate army moved through East Tennessee to defend Murfreesboro. General Braxton Bragg's cavalry harassed General William Rosecrans's Union army and destroyed many of its supply trains. On December 31, 1862, the two armies met near the city in the Battle of Stones River, also called the Battle of Murfreesboro. By January 2, 1863, they had suffered a combined 23,515 casualties, the highest percentage of casualties of any major battle of the war. The result was inconclusive, but it is usually counted a Union victory because Bragg withdrew 36 miles south to Tullahoma. The Union army waited six months before advancing again, but it gained a base for its later drives on Chattanooga and Atlanta.
