In 1823 John McGehee and his wife, Charlotte, built a summer house called Green Wood midway between Abbeville and Cambridge for the cleaner air. A nearby village called Woodville received a post office in 1837, and by 1850 its name had changed to Greenwood. The town grew with its first railroad, the Greenville and Columbia, built in 1852, and was incorporated in 1857.
Beginning in 1872 the American Missionary Association ran the Brewer Normal Institute in Greenwood, a segregated school for African American students that began as a private boarding school, became a public school by 1925 and closed in 1970. The association also built the Brewer Hospital, dedicated on May 24, 1924. Greenwood was mainly a railroad and farming town until 1890, when William L. Durst opened the Greenwood Cotton Mill and the town turned to textile manufacturing. Lander University moved there from Williamston in 1904, and Piedmont Technical College opened in 1966.
