Discover Greenville

The land of present Greenville was a Cherokee hunting ground closed to colonists. Richard Pearis, a wealthy Virginian, arrived around 1754, established ties with the Cherokee and had a child with a Cherokee woman, and about 1770 the Cherokee gave him some 100,000 acres. He built a plantation called the Great Plains on the Reedy River in what is now downtown Greenville. In the Revolution Pearis sided with the Loyalists and joined their Cherokee allies in attacking Patriots, who burned his plantation and jailed him in Charleston. He never returned, but Paris Mountain is named for him. The Treaty of DeWitt's Corner in 1777 ceded almost all Cherokee land in the area to South Carolina.

More about Greenville

Greenville County was created in 1786. Sources differ on the name, which is variously said to describe the land's appearance, to honor General Nathanael Greene or to honor the early settler Isaac Green. Lemuel J. Alston arrived in 1788, bought 400 acres including part of Pearis's old plantation, and in 1797 laid out a village called Pleasantburg, where he built a mansion. Vardry McBee bought Alston's land in 1816 and later made the mansion his home. Pleasantburg was renamed Greenville in 1821 and became a village in 1831. McBee, considered the father of Greenville, gave land for churches, academies and a cotton mill and helped fund Furman University's move to the town. Sources Wikipedia: Greenville, South Carolina
