The Lenape called the area Lechauwitank, "the place at the forks." The land was obtained from them in the Walking Purchase of 1737, which is commemorated by a plaque in the town square. Thomas Penn set aside 1,000 acres where the Lehigh River meets the Delaware for a town, and Easton was formally founded in 1752 and chosen that year as the seat of Northampton County. Its streets were laid out by the surveyor William Parsons at Penn's direction.
During the French and Indian War, the Treaty of Easton was signed there between the provincial government of Pennsylvania and tribes of the Ohio Country, including the Shawnee and Lenape. Easton and the Lehigh Valley strongly supported the Revolution, and Easton was one of only three places, with Philadelphia and Trenton, where the Declaration of Independence was first read aloud in public, at noon on July 8, 1776, four days after its adoption. The Easton flag flown at the reading was one of the first non-colonial flags in the colonies, was later carried by a militia in the War of 1812 and is now the city's flag. Easton also kept a hospital for wounded Continental Army soldiers during the war. Sources Wikipedia: Easton, Pennsylvania
