Discover State College

The Farmers' High School of Pennsylvania was founded in 1855 on 400 acres in what was then Harris Township. The area was isolated, but the land was affordable and the Nittany Valley's limestone made its soil exceptionally fertile. The land had been clear-cut for charcoal for the nearby Centre Furnace. In 1862 the school was renamed the Agricultural College of Pennsylvania, the forerunner of Penn State.

More about State College

College Township, formed in 1875, took in most of what is now State College. From 1885 the town's main link with the outside world was a Pennsylvania Railroad station at nearby Lemont, from which travelers had to finish the trip by coach. In 1892 a new station on West College Avenue connected State College to the Bellefonte Central Railroad, a 20-mile line that took 50 minutes to reach Bellefonte through the Scotia Barrens and Buffalo Run Valley. Regular passenger trains ran until 1917 and mixed trains until 1945. On August 29, 1896, State College separated from College Township as a borough. From 1900 to 1910 the area around the early downtown filled in, and the hilly area south of Beaver Avenue became known as Highland Park, later the Highlands. The borough began expanding through annexations in 1916. Sources Wikipedia: State College, Pennsylvania
