In 1727 John Digges, an Irish nobleman of Prince George's County, Maryland, received a grant of 10,000 acres from Charles Calvert, 5th Baron Baltimore, where Hanover now stands. Called Digges Choice, it drew a group of Catholics who founded the Conewago Settlement in 1730, and settlers from both Maryland and Pennsylvania arrived in the 1730s. Because the two colonies disagreed on their border, the area was claimed by both, and property disputes lasted until 1760. They were ended by the survey of the Mason-Dixon line by Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon between 1763 and 1767.

More about Hanover

In 1745 Richard McAllister, a Scots-Irish Presbyterian from the Cumberland Valley, bought the tract on which the original town was built, then dense forest of hickory, walnut and oak. He built a log house at today's Baltimore and Middle streets and opened a store and tavern, and in 1763 he divided his farm into lots and founded the town. German settlers called it Hickory Town, and it was also known as McAllister's Town. The name Hanover was suggested by Michael Tanner, a York County commissioner and native of Hanover, Germany, and the founders accepted it to please the German settlers. Thomas Jefferson spent the night of April 12, 1776, at Caspar Reinecker's inn, the Sign of the Horse, on his way to Philadelphia. In the Civil War, Union and Confederate cavalry under J.E.B. Stuart fought a sharp, inconclusive battle in the town and the fields to the south just before the Battle of Gettysburg, delaying Stuart's cavalry on its way there. Hanover's industries have included cigars, gloves, silks, shoes, furniture and wire cloth. Sources Wikipedia: Hanover, Pennsylvania
