When the Santa Fe Railroad built into Indian Territory in 1887, it set up a water and coaling station for its steam engines at this spot, the highest point on the line in Oklahoma County, so trains could gather speed going downhill in either direction. The railroad named the station for Edmond Burdick, its traveling freight agent, and settlers kept the name. The town sprang up overnight in the Land Run of April 22, 1889, as homesteads were staked around the station. The Seminole Town and Development Company, a syndicate tied to the railroad, drew up the original plat, and many streets were named for men connected with the railroad or the syndicate. The first mayor and officers were elected in May 1889, and the 1890 census counted 294 residents.

More about Edmond

The first public schoolhouse in Oklahoma Territory, finished in August 1889, still stands in Edmond on 2nd Street. St. John the Baptist Catholic Church was the first church opened after the land run. Also in 1889, John and Ophelia Gower, a formerly enslaved couple, founded the Gower Cemetery as a free burial ground for Black and poor families. It is the only surviving trace of an early Black homesteading community in Edmond and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000. In December 1890 the territorial legislature created a normal school in Edmond, along with the university at Norman and the agricultural college at Stillwater. Its first classes met on November 9, 1891, in the Methodist church, and the school is now the University of Central Oklahoma. Sources Wikipedia: Edmond, Oklahoma
