The earliest known people of the area were the Lenape, specifically the Axion band, the largest on the Delaware River in the mid-17th century. Quakers led by Mahlon Stacy of Handsworth, near Sheffield, England, made the first European settlement in 1679, at a place then called the Falls of the Delaware, seeking religious freedom from persecution at home. By 1719 the town was called Trent-towne, after William Trent, a leading landowner who bought much of the land from Stacy's family, and the name was later shortened to Trenton. Its first municipal boundaries were recorded on March 2, 1720, and a courthouse and jail were built around the same time.
More about Trenton
The Old Barracks were built in 1758 to house British soldiers during the French and Indian War. On January 19, 1764, Benjamin Franklin, as Postmaster General, appointed the merchant Abraham Hunt as Trenton's first postmaster. On December 25 and 26, 1776, George Washington's army crossed the icy Delaware and defeated the Hessian garrison in the Battle of Trenton, and the Second Battle of Trenton, at Assunpink Creek, followed on January 2, 1777.
After the war the Congress of the Confederation met at the French Arms Tavern from November 1 to December 24, 1784. New England and other northern states favored Trenton as the permanent national capital, but the southern states won a site below the Mason-Dixon line. On April 21, 1789, the city held a reception for George Washington on his way to his inauguration.
