Jersey City lies in Lenapehoking, the homeland of the Lenape. In 1609 Henry Hudson anchored the Half Moon at Harsimus Cove and other spots along the river before sailing north, and the city's flag, based on the Dutch Prince's Flag, shows his ship. Michael Reyniersz Pauw received a patroon's grant and bought the west bank of the Hudson from the Lenape for wampum, cloth, kettles, guns, blankets and half a barrel of beer. The deed, dated November 22, 1630, is the earliest known conveyance for what are now Hoboken and Jersey City. The colony was named Pavonia, "land of the peacock," after Pauw's name. He never settled it and sold it back in 1633, when a house was built at Communipaw for the superintendent Jan Evertsen Bout. Cornelius Van Vorst, whose family became prominent, settled at Harsimus Cove in 1634.
Director-General Willem Kieft tried to drive out the Lenape with threats and taxes. On the night of February 25, 1643, without his council's approval, he ordered an attack at Pavonia that killed about 120 Lenape, including women and children. Lenape raids in reply nearly destroyed the west-bank settlement. In the Peach War of September 15, 1655, Munsee forces attacked Pavonia, killing 40 colonists and taking more than 100 captives, who were held at Paulus Hook and later ransomed. On January 10, 1658, Peter Stuyvesant "re-purchased" the farms of Communipaw, Harsimus, Paulus Hook and nearby lands. Settlers returning to the west bank founded the palisaded village of Bergen in 1660 around what is now Bergen Square, described as the first town square in North America.
