Discover Minot

Minot came into being in 1886, when the Great Northern Railway laid track through the area and a tent town sprang up overnight, as if by magic, giving it the nickname Magic City; within five months it had more than 5,000 people. The railroad placed the townsite on the land of the homesteader Erik Ramstad, who was persuaded to give up his claim and became a city leader. The town was named for Henry Minot, a Great Northern investor, ornithologist and friend of James J. Hill. Its Hidatsa name, maagada'ashish, means "Plum Coulee."

More about Minot

Minot was incorporated on July 16, 1887. The Soo Line, building from Valley City to Canada, was persuaded by local interests to route through Minot rather than cross the Souris River at Burlington, and arrived in 1893. In 1898 a tornado destroyed the wooden Gassman Coulee Bridge, and a passenger train stopped just in time; until a steel trestle was finished in 1899, passengers were carried across the coulee by wagon. From 1905 to 1920 Minot was a wide-open town, and court records support its old reputation as North Dakota's crime capital. During Prohibition it became a supply hub for liquor smuggled from Canada, using a network of tunnels, and earned the nickname Little Chicago. Minot Air Force Base was built nearby in 1956 and 1957. In 2011 the Souris River crested three feet above its 1881 record, damaging about a fifth of the city and more than 4,100 homes. Sources Wikipedia: Minot, North Dakota
