Before the Treaty of Hopewell, the land where Hendersonville stands was home to the Cherokee. After the treaty white settlers moved in and eventually took all of what is now Henderson County. Poor trade links held back growth until the Buncombe Turnpike was completed in 1827, after which wealthy Low Country planters began building summer homes in the area. As the population grew, Henderson County was split from Buncombe County in 1838. Like the county, the city is named for Leonard Henderson, chief justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court.
Judge Mitchell King, who owned 1,000 acres, donated 50 of them for the town and used enslaved African Americans he owned to lay out its 100-foot-wide Main Street. Formed in 1838 and chartered in 1847 as the county seat, Hendersonville is known as the City of Four Seasons. Its well-preserved Main Street and downtown, in buildings that once housed the town's key businesses, are lined with restaurants, antique shops and boutiques. The city lies 22 miles south of Asheville and had 15,137 residents in 2020. Sources Wikipedia: Hendersonville, North Carolina
