The Tuscarora and Catawba lived in the area before European settlement, and smallpox greatly reduced their numbers. In the 1750s John Bradford opened an inn, or ordinary, giving the place its first name, Bradford's Ordinary. Most of the land belonged to two men named Nathaniel Jones. Jones of White Plains plantation, who arrived around 1775, owned 10,461 acres in eastern Cary, and Jones of Crabtree owned most of the west. After the Revolution the settlement lay on the road between the new capital at Raleigh and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Eli Yates added a gristmill and sawmill in the early 19th century, and Rufus Jones founded the first free school and Asbury Methodist Church in the 1840s.

More about Cary

The North Carolina Railroad came through in 1854, laid mostly by enslaved workers, and the Chatham Railroad followed in 1868. That year of 1854 the farmer and lumberman Allison Francis Page, credited as the town's founder, paid $2,000 for 300 acres around the planned junction, built a house, sawmill and store, and gave 10 acres for a depot. The place was called Page's Siding, Page's Station and other names until 1856, when Page opened a post office and named the town Cary for Samuel Fenton Cary, head of the Sons of Temperance, who had spoken in Raleigh two months before. The Civil War reached Cary on April 16, 1865, when 5,000 Confederate troops under General Wade Hampton III camped there. The next day Raleigh surrendered to General Sherman, and Union troops of the XVII Corps under Major General Francis Preston Blair Jr. arrived. Sources Wikipedia: Cary, North Carolina
