Discover Diamondhead

Diamondhead was born as a resort development in the space age. Much of its land was bought in 1937 by Walter Gex Sr. from the Gulf State Paper Company and the Easy Opener Bag Company, and his holdings eventually reached nearly 5,000 acres. On October 25, 1961, NASA announced the Mississippi Test Facility, now Stennis Space Center, on the Pearl River in Hancock County, bringing an influx of government workers, contractors and their families to the area.

More about Diamondhead

In the late 1960s a resort company, D.E.A.R., Inc., later the Diamondhead Corporation, chose the site for its first project. At about 100 feet above sea level, it is the highest ground on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, so the developers named it after Diamond Head, the volcanic cone on Oahu, and gave it Hawaiian-style architecture, landscaping and street names. Plans for what was billed as the largest resort community in the southern United States were announced in 1969. The company was due to close on the land on August 18, 1969, the day after Hurricane Camille struck Hancock County; finding the area far less damaged than the coast, it went ahead. Streets, model homes, a country club and an airport followed. Interstate 10 reached the Diamondhead exit in October 1970, and by June 1973 some 3,700 lots had been sold. After decades as an unincorporated community, Diamondhead was officially incorporated as a city in February 2012. Sources Wikipedia: Diamondhead, Mississippi
