St. Joseph was founded on the Missouri River by Joseph Robidoux, a fur trader of French-Canadian descent, and incorporated in 1843. Its main east-west downtown streets were named for his eight children, Faraon, Jules, Francois, Felix, Edmond, Charles, Sylvanie and Messanie, and the street between Sylvanie and Messanie for his second wife, Angelique.
In its early days St. Joe was a busy, rough frontier town and a last supply point for travelers heading west. Like Independence, it was a jumping-off point for emigrants bound for Oregon in the mid-1800s, who stayed there to buy supplies before setting out in wagon trains across the plains. It was the westernmost point in the United States reachable by rail until after the Civil War, which earned it the title Gateway to the West. From April 3, 1860, to late October 1861, St. Joseph was one of the two ends of the Pony Express, which carried fast mail across land the railroad had not yet reached. The Pony Express Museum now occupies the company's old stables, and the city's slogan is "Where the Pony Express started and Jesse James ended." The town's main hotel, the Patee House, was used after the Civil War by the Patee Female College and the St. Joseph Female College. Sources Wikipedia: St. Joseph, Missouri
