The exact date of the first settlement in the Valley of Florissant is unknown, but it is one of the oldest settlements in Missouri, and some historians believe it was settled about the same time as St. Louis. Its first civil government was formed in 1786, and Spanish records in Havana show 40 people and seven plantations at the time of the 1787 census. Its French settlers called the village Fleurissant, "blooming," while its Spanish rulers called it St. Ferdinand. It was a typical French village with commons and common fields, centered on the parish of St. Ferdinand, whose Old St. Ferdinand Shrine survives and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Cold Water Cemetery had its first burial around 1809 and was listed on the National Register in 2004. As late as 1889 the town was mostly French-speaking. A rail line extended from Normandy reached Florissant in 1878, and the last train ran on November 14, 1931. After World War II Florissant grew from a small village into a large suburb as developers such as the Alfred H. Mayer Company built subdivisions on former farmland. Around 18,000 houses were built between 1947 and 1980, and the population peaked at about 76,000 in the mid-1970s. Sources Wikipedia: Florissant, Missouri
